Consistency in the type of calculator used by test participants ensures a level playing field and alleviates concern for a possible unfair advantage across test takers, for both knowledge-based (written) and skill-based (performance) assessments, and for online and paper/pencil delivery.

Guidelines for Knowledge-Based (written)Testing
Most NOCTI knowledge-based (written) assessments do not contain math problems that require more than a standard, non-programmable calculator.  If a formula is required to answer a question, then the formula is provided. The following calculator guidelines apply to all NOCTI knowledge-based (written) assessments:
  • Non-programmable/non-recording calculators may be used.
  • The online testing system provides a built-in, standard calculator. The functions are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percent, and square root.
  • Pre-programmed, recording, and scientific calculators are NOT allowed.
Calculators with only the following functions (keys) are permitted:
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Percent
  • Square root
Guidelines for Skill-Based (performance)Testing
For some NOCTI skill-based (performance) assessments, more complex math calculations may be required.  In those cases, the type of calculator required will be listed in the equipment, materials, and supplies list for the specific assessment title. This information will also be provided in the Instructor Prep Pack for the test.

If a specific calculator is not designated in the equipment, materials, and supplies list for the assessment, then the following calculator guidelines apply for the skill-based (performance) assessment:
  • Non-programmable/non-recording calculators may be used.
  • Pre-programmed, recording, and scientific calculators are NOT allowed.
Calculators with only the following functions (keys) are permitted:
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Percent
  • Square root
