Instructors play a critical role in the testing program at their site.  Based on liability and logistical considerations, the following information clarifies the role of instructors during test administration.

Knowledge-Based Testing
Instructors can proctor knowledge-based tests; however, they cannot proctor their own students or students in a subject related to what they teach.

Skill-Based Testing
Skill-based assessments are conducted in shops or laboratories that are equipped with a sufficient number of machines, equipment, tools, and other required materials needed to administer the test. The instructor should verify that all of the machines are in working order and that there is proper heat, light, ventilation, power, gas, and other setup requirements prior to the start of the skill-based assessment.

NOCTI provides Instructor Prep Packs which outline the instructor's role in the assessment process. It is important that instructors are informed on NOCTI's assessment services, policies, and procedures. The Instructor Prep Packs contain a list of equipment, materials, and supplies needed for each assessment, information that can be used when setting up the shop or lab, and what is expected of the instructor during the assessment administration. Instructor Prep Packs are available for download from the Client Services Center and through the Teacher Resource Center

Instructors must NOT facilitate, observe, or participate in the evaluation/administration of skill-based assessments. The instructor may be accessible during the assessment for liability purposes and to assist with tasks that the evaluator cannot do (e.g., locate extra materials, shut off power, give a restroom pass, etc.).

To maintain the integrity of the assessment, instructors must NOT have access to assessment booklets, answer sheets, or evaluator guides.
