The Text-to-Speech (TTS) option is an online assessment delivery feature that supports accessibility by allowing test takers to view questions and answer choices in a larger font and hear questions and answer choices read aloud using a computerized voice. When the audio icon is selected, the text being read enlarges on the screen to help the test taker follow along visually. Audio is available for test questions and answer choices only. It is not provided for instructions, participant information, demographic items, or text that appears within graphics, tables, or diagrams.
All NOCTI credentials, along with many partner and customized assessments, are available in TTS format.
Who Should Use TTS?
TTS is intended for test takers whose IEP or 504 plan recommends the use of a reader. This may include individuals who have:
- Learning disabilities, such as dyslexia
- Reading challenges or limited English proficiency
- Other conditions that make accessing written text more difficult
Equipment Requirements
TTS assessments require additional system resources compared to standard online assessments. To support smooth delivery, Site Coordinators are encouraged to follow the Online Testing Device Setup instructions carefully. When administering TTS to large groups, increased network demand may occur. In these situations, coordination with local technology staff can help ensure a reliable testing experience.
Administration Guidelines
- TTS assessments do not require additional administration time. However, extended time or other accommodations may still be appropriate based on the test taker’s IEP or 504 plan.
- Assessments must be administered in a proctored environment. Increasing the proctor-to-test-taker ratio may be helpful to provide adequate support.
- Scoring and reporting for TTS assessments are the same as for standard assessments and do not affect scoring timelines.
Setting Up TTS
Site Coordinators can assign TTS to eligible user codes through the Client Services Center. TTS-enabled user codes are identified by a checkmark in the TTS column and display a headphone icon when printing labels.
During the assessment
- The computerized voice identifies the item number as it appears on screen.
- Audio icons are provided for both questions and answer choices. Selecting an icon enlarges the text and reads the content aloud.
- The system confirms the answer selection verbally (e.g., "You have selected D.").
- Audio playback for one item will stop if another audio icon is clicked. Participants should allow each audio segment to finish before moving to the next item.
At the end of the assessment, the computerized audio guides the participant through the summary page and scoring process, supporting clear and consistent navigation.
Best Practices
- Use headphones to minimize noise and maintain a focused testing environment.
- Ensure participants are familiar with the audio controls and understand how to navigate the assessment.
- Consider additional accommodations, such as separate administration or extended time, when needed to support focus, stamina, or other individual needs.
